The building regulations document B was brought into effect in 2007. This legislation required that buildings should be subdivided into compartments separated by fire resistant floors and/or walls. This also applies to Regulation 38

The compartments aim to create a safe barrier to fire between the compartments they separate and prevent the rapid spread of a fire.
